This afternoon I was sitting at my computer desk shortly after returning from my daughter's road test. Suddenly I felt a weird sort of dizzy feeling, but not really dizzy. I couldn't exactly describe it. I felt the ground sort of rippling violently, kind of like when you go wake boarding behind a boat? I could literally feel the waves bouncing the house up and down, and the windows shook a little.
I thought at first one of my kids snuck up behind me and was jiggling my chair in order to scare me, but nobody was there when I turned around. I sat there feeling the earth move below me for a minute, actually getting a thrill out of the sensation! When I looked over at my fish aquarium, the water was sloshing back and forth rapidly. Some water even splashed out of the tank.
I was surprised by how long it continued. While I was looking around the room, my daughter suddenly appeared and asked me why was the house moving. I told her it was an earthquake, and she said "NO!" and didn't believe me at first, but I insisted that it was precisely what was going on, and she grabbed my hand and made me feel her heart. She said she was so scared! But I really thought it was the most awesome thing ever! If I had to guess, it lasted for about a minute. Feeling sustained rumbling underneath you while your house is swaying is pretty darned cool if you ask me!
I know I'm strange, but I almost hope there are more aftershocks!

Classic thing about earthquakes is that feeling after you survive it .
It's like a crazy rollercoaster ride.
You want more, but you don't wanna clean up the mess after. I've been thru plenty.
Luckily there was no mess to clean up here! Just a little water splashed on the floor.
Yeah , what you all got was kinda mild. Glad you survived it.
:-)
I saw on the news that an earthquake hit the East Coast. That's so bizarre! I only think of earthquakes hitting California. Glad you're OK!
We're fine! And my author friend Len Barnhart lives in Virginia and he told me that the earthquake only shook his house up a little, so all in all it was pretty safe, and an experience to laugh about later on.
Thanks guys for the well wishes!
How freaky! Glad you're okay and wasn't bad. And like Max said, you can say you survived one!
I spent 8 weeks in El Salvador and there wasn't more than 12 hours that went by without the earth shaking. I only remember about three of them that really shook stuff.
Years later there was a big one south of us in Nevada that had me jumping out of bed because I thought my house was being robbed.
Yeah, it was just so unusual and I didn't really know what it was at first. I live near a highway where large trucks pass by and sometimes they make the ground rumble, but only for a second. This lasted so much longer, so I knew something else was going on. Plus it just felt "different".
We had a 3.1 aftershock a couple of days ago. My dog was afraid to stay in the house all day afterwards. He's a wuss. He's even afraid of rain.
